The Happening Shots

This shot is of the clouds at a worms eye view moving fairly fast in the sky. The white title stands out on the blue sky but fades in the clouds which creats an illusion of blurriness between the clear and covered, representing the norm. In the background, when playing, there is layered music that is suspenseful and eerie which builds up to a crescendo eventually, the drums act as heart beats that get faster.
This shot is also of the clouds but to the end of the credits, it shows the change between beginning and end. The image grows dimmer as the credits go on, the light/mid blue turns to a deep sea blue mixed with a light black. The clouds merge with the sky and start to dissapear, however the clouds themselves get more grey. The cloud speed follows the music and speeds up, the music speeds up and gets a lot louder to create tension before the shot switches.

This shot is a close up of a man walking his dog to show the 'norm' in this film. The mans face isn't shown to create a sense of mystery and wonder, it leaves things to the imagination. There is diegetic sound such as the dog panting and people talking in the background, however there is also non-diegetic sound such as the eerie music playing in the background.

This is an establishing shot to show the setting of the opening sceen. It makes you think everything is normal since people are going about with their everyday lives, walking down the path through the park. This is also a long shot and wide shot as there is a lot to the shot such as the wide angle showing the whole cross section of the path, plus a high up shot into the trees which gives a sense of looking down on everything.

This shot is a jump cut when it goes straight from the view of the people to the low angle sky shot of the building tops through the trees. There is the juxapostion of the rustling leaves to create significance and tension. There is an unusual sound bridge of the voices in the park to link the previous shot to this one, also the eerie music continues over.

This is an example of a zoom shot, here the camera is zooming into the action of these two characters talking, which also shows this is a two shot. The zoom shows where you should be focusing, it generally goes from an establishing shot to a zoom then to a close up. This is the first interactive sceen in the film which means you want to focus to see how the film is going to start. At this point, what's known as the 'cocktail party effect' is introduced, this is when the background noise is minimised.

This is whats known as a shot reverse (reaction) shot, this is when the camera focuses on someone, then at what they are looking at and then back at their reaction face. This shows what ths character is like due to the way they react to certain situations. In this incident she is shocked to see people 'clawing at themselves'. In this shot the music volume is minimised to allow the voice/conversation of this "main" character to be heard, but the eerieness remains in the background.

This scene is an extreme close up of this girl pulling a knitting pin out of her hair, her firmgrip shows she is likely to do something bad/ evil with this once she has pulled it out. The fact that the camera is focused on the pin coming out shows that this is an important prop either shortly following or later in the movie. The music is a breezy, creepy sound that is getting higher pitched showing that it is leading up to something. Whe  she grabs onto the pin, there is a drum beat that turns into a double beat (heart beat).

This is a close up shot of the girl stabbing herself with the knitting pin, also it shows the reaction of the other character. In the background the noise has come to a holt as the people have been affected by the strange goings on. However, the animal noise such as the dog panting is still in the background. The music is at a normal volume so that you can still hear any talking going on. The heart beat continues over to this shot, and a squelch is added when she stabs herself, also more music is added at this point to add to the event.

  1. Clear understanding of the task and the beginnings of a good grasp of technical terminology. Try to be detailed and precise in your analysis and avoid vagueness.
